KANSAS CITY Browns Customized Color Rush Jerseys , Mo. (AP) — Mitchell Schwartz was chosen by Cleveland in the second round of the 2012 draft with the idea he could be the next Joe Thomas, or at the very least learn from the Browns‘ star offensive tackle.Well, he did learn a lot of lessons. The biggest may have been durability.Thomas once played 10,363 consecutive snaps over the span of 11 seasons before hurting his left arm in a game against Tennessee. The streak that began with Week 1 of his rookie year and survived a slew of injuries, including torn and strained knee ligaments and multiple high ankle sprains.Schwartz, who returns to Cleveland for the first time on the opposing sideline Sunday, has his own incredible streak going now that he’s with the Kansas City Chiefs. After playing every snap his first four seasons with the Browns, and continuing it during the past two-plus seasons in Kansas City, the snap count is up to 6,870 over the course of 104 games.“He’s done a heck of a job being able to endure,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “He had a good teacher he learned from, too, in Thomas. He had a nice streak going before he got hurt. Mitch has been tremendous. He’s one of the smartest linemen I’ve ever been around.”Schwartz filled a massive need when the Chiefs signed him to a $33 million Cleveland Browns T-Shirts , five-year deal, and he has met all expectations. Not only did he help protect Alex Smith during some of his best years, and is now keeping young quarterback Patrick Mahomes clean during his breakout season, Schwartz also paved the way for Kareem Hunt to win last year’s NFL rushing title as a rookie. So far, the Chiefs have allowed just 10 sacks — one behind the New Orleans Saints for the fewest in the league — while leading the NFL in scoring and a number of other offensive categories. Delving deeper into the numbers, the Chiefs have a league-high 13 carries of at least 10 yards while running behind Schwartz on the right side of the offensive line.In other words, the soft-spoken Schwartz is a big reason why Mahomes leads the NFL in yards passing and Hunt is fourth in the league in yards rushing.“Those two tackles are really good players, Schwartz and (left tackle Eric) Fisher. They’re the best we’ve played since I’ve been here,” Broncos coach Vance Joseph said. “They’ve blocked us one-on-one from time to time and they win a lot against us.”That may be the most incredible part of Schwartz’s success rate: It has come against some of the best pass rushers in the NFL, including Broncos linebackers Von Miller and Bradley Chubb.Elsewhere in the AFC West, he has to deal with the Chargers’ Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa, and until this past offseason, Raiders star Khalil Mack and his teammate Bruce Irvin.“I’ve been very blessed and fortunate to play and coach with a number of offensive linemen https://www.brownsfanshop.com/hats , and those guys never get the credit that they deserve,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. “They get all the negative flack when they give up a sack or something, but those guys are the ultimate team players because they are going to do whatever it takes to win.”Even if it means playing through bumps and bruises to keep a consecutive snaps streak going.Schwartz acknowledged this week that it will be odd returning to Cleveland, where he learned from one of the best offensive tackles to ever play the game. He has good memories from playing with the Browns, even if they never won enough, and he’s looking forward to seeing some old friends.Once the game begins, though, Schwartz is only worried about helping Kansas City keep winning.“We just keep trusting. No one gets upset, starts screaming or any of that stuff,” Schwartz said. “We’re a pretty good offense and if we go out there and do our jobs, it’s pretty hard to stop us.”Notes: Strong safety Eric Berry (heel), C Mitch Morse (concussion) and LB Frank Zombo (hamstring) did not practice Thursday. LBs Justin Houston (hamstring) and Anthony Hitchens (ribs) were limited. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning recently reunited, more than three years after Manning won the last installment of their rivalry. Since then Cleveland Browns Hoodie , we’ve been waiting for another rivalry of that type to emerge. It hasn’t. And perhaps it never will. The planets lined up perfectly for Brady and Manning to develop a relationship that resulted in 17 contests in the 15 years that their careers overlapped. Both played for teams that dominated their divisions, ensuring that they’d play each other virtually every season. By making it to the playoffs so consistently, they also increased the chances of crossing paths in the postseason.Other quarterbacks will have a hard time doing that. It’s a given that they need to be roughly the same age. If they’re in the same division, however, the quarterback rivalry easily will take a back seat to the broader rivalry between the teams. Also, they become less likely to meet in the postseason, where quarterbacks rivalries take on greater significance. But whether it’s Russell Wilson vs. Cam Newton (which briefly seemed like it could become the new Brady-Manning a few years ago) or Patrick Mahomes vs. Baker Mayfield or Mahomes vs. Deshaun Watson or Watson vs. Mayfield, their teams need to dominate in their divisions the way that Brady’s Patriots and Manning’s Colts/Broncos did.Currently, that’s going to be hard to do. There are simply too many good teams in both conferences, and Brady continues to be the only guy with a clear chance to continue to win his division every year. And it’s clear that, with Manning gone, Brady has no real rival.
Matt LaFleur envisioned for the running game when he took over the reins of the Packers in January.Jones had 116 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 23 carries in Green Bay's 21-16 win over the Minnesota Vikings."He did an unbelievable job https://www.thepackersfanshop.com/Davon-House-Jersey ," LaFleur said Monday of the third-year running back. "Matter of fact, he was our player of the game on offense. He did a great job. But I thought it really started up front, too. I thought our offensive line did a really nice job blocking for him."After totaling just 39 yards rushing at Chicago in the season opener, Jones eclipsed the 100-yard mark on the ground for the fourth time in his career and the first time since Week 10 of last season. While the spotlight will be on LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers this season, LaFleur has maintained that in order for the offense to be as efficient and effective as he wants, the run game has to be established early and often.Jones also had four catches for 34 yards, including a 15-yard gain on a grab with the Green Bay offense backed up to its end zone."Wins aren't pretty in the NFL, but as long as you get that W in the win column, that's all that matters," Jones said.WHAT'S WORKINGThe secret is out: The Packers have a really good defense. The defense, for the second straight week, carried the team to victory. KANSAS CITY https://www.coltsfanshop.com/Andrew-Luck-Jersey , Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs‘ defense had heard the chorus of critics all season long, the ones that claimed their sieve-like line and shaky backfield would spoil young superstar Patrick Mahomes and cost them a chance to chase their first Super Bowl appearance in decades.Well, that defense is a big reason why the Chiefs are one step away. With persistent snow turning Arrowhead Stadium into a winter wonderland, the Chiefs successfully shut down Andrew Luck and the potent Indianapolis Colts on Saturday.Article continues below ...Mahomes and the rest of their own high-powered offense took care of the rest, rolling to a 31-13 victory in the divisional round to end 25 years of playoff frustration.“We’re such a different team,” said Mahomes, who threw for 278 yards while running for a score. “We have such young players. We have such confidence we’re going to win every single game.”Damien Williams ran through snow and muck for 129 yards and another score, and Tyreek Hill had 72 yards receiving and a touchdown run, as the Chiefs beat Indianapolis for the first time in five playoff meetings to earn their first AFC title game appearance since January 1994.The AFC West champions will play the winner of Sunday’s game between the division-rival Los Angeles Chargers and the New England Patriots next weekend for a spot in the Super Bowl in Atlanta.“We wanted to light up the city,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. “We didn’t want to take the road down memory lane.”Andrew Luck was held to 203 yards passing for the Colts, while Marlon Mack was a non-factor on the ground. He had 46 yards rushing before leaving late in the fourth quarter with a hip injury.“Was not expecting it to end today,” Colts coach Frank Reich said. “We knew we were going up against a very good team, a very well-coached team. It’s hard to lose. It’s hard to lose when you’ve come this far with the team that we have and the guys that we have Josh Ferguson Jersey , so credit to the Chiefs.“They outcoached us, they outplayed us,” Reich said. “We just gave them too many opportunities.”The Chiefs set out to change history from the opening minutes, when they forced a three-and-out and then waltzed right over a Colts defense that nearly shut out the Texans a week ago. Mahomes and Co. scored on their first three possessions , then again just before halftime, to take a 24-7 lead.If there was any question whether this would be Kansas City’s day, it was answered when Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri missed a 23-yard field-goal try off the upright just before halftime. It was the first time in 22 postseason attempts that he’d missed from that close. Not that the Chiefs thought they had it wrapped up.They’ve had bigger playoff meltdowns against the Colts. There was the 10-7 loss in which Lin Elliott missed three field goals when the Chiefs were the No. 1 seed, and the loss at Arrowhead Stadium in 2003 in which nobody punted. Five years ago, they blew a 38-10 second-half lead against Luck and the Colts to spoil Andy Reid’s first season. Not this time. Not with this Kansas City quarterback. After shattering nearly every franchise passing record, Mahomes picked up right where he left off in his regular-season finale. He led the Chiefs on touchdown drives of 90 and 70 yards to open the game, quickly identified a favorite target in Travis Kelce, and shook off a banged-up knee to scramble for a touchdown late in the first half to give his team a big cushion.Of course, the Chiefs (13-4) didn’t need it the way their defense was playing. The Colts (11-7) went three-and-out on their first four possessions T.J. Green Color Rush Jersey , were outgained 185-12 in the first quarter, and Luck didn’t complete a pass until he found T.Y Hilton early in the second.Their lone bright spot came when Zach Paschal recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown .Even when the Colts caught a break and Sammy Watkins fumbled the ball to them late in the third quarter, they were quick to give it back. Dee Ford stripped Luck and fellow linebacker Justin Houston plopped on the ball, ruining another red-zone opportunity.“It seemed like the rushers were getting there all night,” Chiefs cornerback Kendall Fuller said. “Guys sticking coverage, playing good technique, good eyes and things like that.”The Colts finally scored an offensive touchdown with 5:31 left in the game. But in the perfect summation of their lousy afternoon, their erstwhile star kicker missed the extra point.By that point, the party in the stands already had begun. The Chiefs had lost six straight home playoff games, including heartbreakers to Pittsburgh and Tennessee the past two years. But a proud franchise that won its only Super Bowl title with Len Dawson in 1970, and last played for a spot behind Joe Montana, is once more one step away.“I’m just happy for these guys in this locker room,” Kelce said. “Playoff wins are hard to come by https://www.coltsfanshop.com/Matthias-Farley-Jersey , let alone wins in the NFL. So, I mean, it’s just exciting for us to be able to play next week.”SNOWBALL FIGHTReid was summoned to the corner of the stadium during the two-minute warning in the first half to implore fans to stop throwing snowballs on the field. Earlier in the half, one almost hit Colts punter Rigoberto Sanchez while he was kicking.INJURIESColts: Center Ryan Kelly (knee) left late in the fourth quarter. … FS Malik Hooker (foot) and DE Tyquan Lewis (knee) were inactive, while SS Mike Mitchell (calf) was placed on injured reserve earlier this week. That left the Colts defense without some key pieces.Chiefs: Safety Eric Berry (heel) and running back Spencer Ware (hamstring) were inactive, though Berry — the team’s emotional leader — broke down the pregame huddle in the north end zone.UP NEXTChiefs: Await the Chargers-Patriots winner in the AFC title game.Colts: Begin preparing for April’s draft. The Colts slipped out of playoff contention by losing their last four games and quarterback Jacoby Brissett‘s play has also slipped over that period, but the Colts have no interest in taking a look at Chad Kelly in the final two weeks. That was the response from head coach Frank Reich on Tuesday when he was asked if the team would consider giving Kelly playing time before the end of the regular season.“Jacoby’s our quarterback,” Reich said, via Stephen Holder of TheAthletic.com. “We’re still fighting to get better for these next two games and, really, for next year. Jacoby is still a second-year starter.”Brissett was 18-of-34 for 165 yards in Monday night’s 34-7 loss to the Saints and Reich said they “had a long talk” on Tuesday about the mistakes that Brissett made during the game. That work will continue for a couple more weeks and then the Colts will move on to forming plans for what they hope will be a more fruitful 2020 season.

Many teams seem to use their visits to focus on bringing in players under consideration with their early draft picks. That necessarily results in each team only acquiring one or two players from the list of visitors.Under Ted Thompson and Brian Gutekunst, however, the Green Bay Packers have had much more success in acquiring the players who visit the Packers’ facilities, however. These players end up in Green Bay either as late-round draft picks or undrafted rookies, and in some cases they even sign with the Packers a year or two later.Although Gutekunst has expanded his view for visits beyond Thompson’s vision — which was primarily focused on late-round picks http://www.packerslockerroom.com/authentic-brett-hundley-jersey , potential undrafted players, and prospects with significant character concerns — he did still land eight players in his first draft year from his visit pool. Reed, the son of former NFL receiver Jake Reed Minnesota Vikings Jerseys 2019 , decided not to leave school early. And one specific reason stands out.“[I]t’d be best for me to come back for this team and get us to win a championship,” J.R. Reed said at Georgia’s Pro Day workout on Wednesday, via Chip Towers of DawgNation.com.“It’s always been my goal since I came here to win a national championship,” Reed said. “Coach Smart told me that’s what he wants this team to be. I told him I want to be a part of a championship team. So my goals haven’t really changed. That championship thing is always on your list, every time you play.”It was far from a no-brainer for Reed, whose family consulted with a number of NFL executives before choosing a path.“It was probably one of the hardest decisions I’ve made, besides transferring out of the University of Tulsa,” Reed said. “It just took a lot of praying and marking things down and doing logistics and talking it over with my parents. After weeks and maybe a month going in — because we thought about it before — we decided it’d probably be best for me to come back.”Every player has to make his own decision regarding whether to leave school early Cameron Smith Jersey nfl draft , but if/when the NFL is ready for a player, the player needs to engage in the analysis that leads to the question of whether he’s ready to make the jump. Thursday night loss. While the offensive line’s performance as a whole was less than ideal Spencer Long Jerseys 2019 , there were some positives that stuck out to me. Let’s dive in!Previous editions: Pre 1, Pre 2, Pre 3, Pre 4, W1-DET, W2-MIAAs I will always mention, it is impossible to capture everything with the stats, but with this series I hope to capture the most impactful plays accumulated by each linemen, both positive and negative, to help better our perspective on their production levels. Every single snap does matter, and here we will only be grading a small portion of those snaps White Andre Roberts Jerseys , but this data can still help shape our opinions on players more properly and truly. Do not use these numbers as final judgement, but as useful evidence. So far, I’ve been tracking:Stuffs (runs for 2 yards or less and no first down) allowed in the run gameRushing first downs assisted“Setup runs” assisted (which I now define as a 5+ yard pickup on 1st-3rd down that did not result in a first down). Despite not resulting in a first down, these kinds of pickups are still positive plays that deserve to be tracked.Sacks allowedQB hits allowedQB pressures allowed (pressure counts now include all throws affected by pressure, forced rollouts/dodged defenders, and forced throwaways)Deflections allowed (occurrences when allowing the currently engaged defender to bat/deflect a pass at the line)Open field assists (blocking assists for significant extra yardage/first down by any player, OL or skill position, in the pass game while a pass receiver has the football)Pass blocking snaps (for primary 5 offensive linemen only: official pass attempts + sacks while on field)Penalties (Total accepted, yards, first downs/scores wiped out, and declined)Here are the numbers for the Jets in Week 3!Some of my takeaways:On the positive side Andre Roberts Jerseys 2019 , this was one heck of a game in the blocking department from the skill positions. The vast majority of the Jets’ passing production came via 4 Quincy Enunwa screens in which Jermaine Kearse was a major part of opening up the space needed on each one. In the run game, both Jordan Leggett and Eric Tomlinson stood out with a trio of assists each. Quincy Enunwa continued to add to his assist collection with a pair in this game, bringing his season total to 4.This was a really rough game from Spencer Long and Brian Winters in particular. The offensive line had a somewhat decent first half. However, in the second half, Long and Winters killed the Jets offense. They combined for 9 stuff contributions and 8 total pressures. Long was great in pass protection over the first two weeks but fell apart in this game. Winters was obliterated in the second half in pass protection. All in all, the Jets allowed 11 pressures on 33 pass protection reps (33%), their worst rate so far this season and the second straight week they’ve seen that rate worsen. In the first half, the offensive line was actually pretty decent as a whole. The Jets really got the run game going on their two scoring drives, piling up one 7-9 yard gain after another and eventually creating two Isaiah Crowell scores. I thought James Carpenter had a solid bouneback game, looking especially good as a run blocker in the first half. Brandon Shell also had a few key blocks, though he has tiptoed the line a bit in pass protection over the past couple of weeks. He’s yet to allow a deflection White Neal Sterling Jerseys , sack or hit, but has allowed 6 pressures over the past two weeks. Luck or efficient bend-but-don’t-break play?FILMI mentioned the blocking of the skill positions, so let’s look at a few of those plays. Here, Eric Tomlinson stifles Myles Garrett on the edge and Quincy Enunwa controls the linebacker down the field to create an 8-yard gain for Crowell.Jordan Leggett was drafted for his receiving ability in spite of limited blocking ability. However, so far, he’s stood out much more as a blocker than as a receiver. Here, Leggett holds Garrett on the edge to help create this play for Powell. James Carpenter provides a nice block as well.More good stuff from the tight ends. Jordan Leggett keeps the defensive back out of the play, while Eric Tomlinson pummels the pursuing linebacker.Jermaine Kearse hasn’t had an impact as a receiver yet but he had a tremendous game opening up space for Quincy Enunwa. Kearse was removing defenders to create open green grass on 3 of Enunwa’s 4 first down receptions. Here are a couple of those. His hustle and drive consistently shows up with plays like these. While a bunch of skill position players stood out in the blocking game, one in particular popped out on film in the wrong way: Chris Herndon. He’s having a really rough start in every phase and clearly needs some time on the bench. Here, Herndon comes in motion and takes Myles Garrett on the outside zone. Garrett flows with the play and Herndon has leverage on him as Garrett finds himself on Herndon’s outside shoulder. He’s got a shot to win this matchup but fails to get any push on Garrett and he gives up the stuff as Garrett hits him with a very impressive inside move.OK, a rookie tight end got beat by Myles Garrett. Not a big deal (Even though Leggett and Tomlinson had good reps against him). Well Neal Sterling Jerseys 2019 , here Herndon gets beat by a defensive back. If he can drive this defender off the line, Powell could potentially have only a 1-on-1 matchup against the linebacker in his way. Herndon’s loss in this matchup blows up the play as the Powell meets his first defender 4 yards behind the line instead of at or past the line if Herndon had won the battle.Let’s move on to the actual offensive line! Spencer Long had a very clean first couple of games, but took a big dip against Cleveland, most notably on this sack he allowed to Garrett. He’s a tad late to recognize the movement up front and is playing way too high by the time he encounters Garrett.Brian Winters had himself one terrible game in pass protection, allowing 4 pressures and 1 hit, seen here. Winters has responsibility to get downfield on this screen pass, but can’t afford to let the blitzing defender get a hit on Sam Darnold on an immediate throw like this. Winters literally throws Joe Schobert into Darnold. Schrobert was already creeping in before the snap but Winters clearly did not see it. You’ve got to have better awareness and reactivity than this.Brandon Shell allowed three pressures for the second straight week, though he hasn’t allowed a sack or hit yet. Here, both he and Brian Winters whiff badly on the slide protection designed to get Darnold some space to roll in the opposite direction.Winters simply was getting owned in the lateral game, having no answer for the quickness of the Cleveland front. Here’s a positive play all-around. We see some more physical blocking from Jermaine Kearse as well as some more productive yardage running behind a pulling Brandon Shell. While Shell doesn’t pummel anyone here (it’s tough to ask him to beat a DB to the spot downfield), he executes this assignment plenty solidly to lead Powell to a 7-yard gain on first down. Spencer Long didn’t necessarily impact the play but he laid a pancake downfield. You definitely want to see more of that from him - he’s capable of making these booming blocks on the second level White Doug Middleton Jerseys , but also tends to whiff at a fairly high rate. Here’s what I mean in regards to long. You saw him bounce off the ball and drive straight through the linebacker down the field. He’ll do that here and there. Then, you will see him do something like this. Can Long become more consistent in the run game? Here’s a look at how the Jets are stacking up on the year through three games:What did you think of the Jets offensive line this week? Starting cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick hurt his right shoulder. The Browns lost Pro Bowl rookie cornerback Denzel Ward to an apparent shoulder injury. For the Falcons, running back Tevin Coleman left with a groin injury in the second half and did not return with Atlanta leading Carolina by two scores. Panthers Pro Bowl guard Trai Turner left with an ankle injury in Carolina’s loss, which ended its slim playoff chances. The San Francisco 49ers had four players leave their loss to the NFC North champion Chicago Bears with injuries: running back Matt Breida (ankle), wide receiver Dante Pettis (left knee) White Derek Rivers Jerseys , tight end Garrett Celek (concussion) and cornerback K’Waun Williams (knee). Running back Devin Singletary has taken a step toward returning to the Bills lineup.Singletary injured his hamstring in Week Two’s win over the Giants, which led him to miss both practices and last Sunday’s games against the Bengals. Singletary remained out of practice on Wednesday, but Thursday brought some better news about his condition.According to multiple reporters at Bills practice, Singletary was in a helmet and taking part in drills during the portion of practice open to the media. An accounting of how much work he did during the session will have to wait until the release of the injury report. That participation level and Friday’s workload will also provide some idea about the chances that Singletary plays against the Patriots this weekend. If he doesn’t, Frank Gore and T.J. Yeldon will handle backfield duties in the matchup of 3-0 teams.
suspension and his impact was hard to miss in Sunday’s 27-21 win over the Giants.Peterson sacked Giants quarterback Daniel Jones in the fourth quarter and forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Haason Reddick. That set up a field goal that forced the Giants to try for a touchdown in the final minutes of the game Youth Ryan Connelly Jersey , but that effort was thwarted by two more sacks. The Cardinals racked up eight sacks overall and Chandler Jones was responsible for four of them. Jones credited Peterson’s presence with opening things up for the pass rushers.“I knew that he was going to help,” Jones said, via the team’s website. “I knew the quarterback was going to have to hold the ball more. And the quarterback being a rookie, I felt that would help us, too. It was great. This was great for our team and hopefully this win kind of gives us a snowball effect and we just stack them.”Peterson said Cardinals coaches did “a great job of putting me in position to help this team and help make plays like that down the stretch” in his 2019 debut. The outing was a reminder of why the Cardinals have been resistant to any notion of trading Peterson and a glimpse at what their defense can be when everyone’s firing on all cylinders. ORCHARD PARK Frank Gore Jerseys 2019 , N.Y. (AP) — Quarterback Nathan Peterman never lost faith in himself following the most difficult moment of his young NFL career. What’s more important, neither did Bills coach Sean McDermott. In 10 months, Peterman has gone from throwing five interceptions in the first half of his first career start, to being chosen Monday as Buffalo’s season-opening starter. Though the job is his until rookie first-round pick Josh Allen is deemed ready, Peterman’s ascension from being counted out to being counted on is a testament to the second-year player’s perseverance.“I believe he’s a resilient young man. He’s certainly come through some times of adversity throughout his career,” McDermott said shortly the Bills announced Peterman would be their starter at Baltimore on Sunday. “Usually, if you go through some adversity early in life, you’re that much more prepared for it when it comes around later.”Peterman is aware of the critics he attracted following a 54-24 loss at the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 19 in which McDermott’s decision to start him ahead of Tyrod Taylor backfired. And Peterman was grateful for the opportunity to prove himself during a three-way competition that was trimmed to two once AJ McCarron was traded to Oakland last weekend.“It means a lot. I’m thankful for the people that stood by my side through hard times,” Peterman said.“When you have obstacles, hard things in your life, that doesn’t mean you should quit,” he added. “Maybe that’s the way some people think, but that’s not the way I think. For me, it just amps me up even more and gives me a lot of desire and drive to go accomplish those goals.”McDermott based his decision on how the Peterman handled himself upon arriving at the team’s facility in April, and his steady performance in three preseason appearances.Peterman put up the best passing numbers during the preseason, 33 of 41 for 432 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. In the meantime, the start of the Allen era is on hold after the strong-armed but raw quarterback showed he requires more development.Allen went 24 of 44 for 210 yards and two touchdowns in three preseason appearances, and particularly struggled in a 26-13 loss to Cincinnati on Aug. 26 in his only preseason start. The 22-year old managed three first downs on seven-plus series while getting little protection from a patchwork offensive line and being sacked five times for 39 yards.“As a competitor, you want to play,” Allen said. “To not play, that’s going to hurt anybody’s feelings, but at the end of the day, it’s football. We’re part of the team. I can’t say anything bad about the decision. Nate played well in the preseason. Now I’m here to help him in any way possible.”The Bills traded up five spots to select the Wyoming product seventh overall — the highest draft position Buffalo has ever selected a quarterback.McDermott declined to get drawn into making comparisons between the two quarterbacks. He described Allen’s development as being on schedule and said the rookie can learn plenty from watching regular-season games from the sideline.“I expect Josh will be ready to go when his number’s called White John Brown Jerseys , whenever it is called. And that’s his focus now,” McDermott said. The Bills are starting over at what’s been an unsettled position since Hall of Famer Jim Kelly retired after the 1996 season. Peterman will become the 11th quarterback to start a season, including Matt Cassel, who took the first snap in 2015.Peterman has a track record of bouncing back from adversity. In his first college start at Tennessee, Peterman had a hand in four turnovers — two interceptions, a fumble while being sacked and a botched handoff — before being pulled during a 31-17 loss at Florida as a redshirt freshman in 2013.He then transferred to Pittsburgh following his sophomore year and excelled in his final two seasons. At Pitt, Peterman completed 378 of 619 attempts for 5,142 yards with 47 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 26 games, which led Buffalo to select him in the fifth round of the draft.Peterman doesn’t look toward starting against Baltimore as a chance to ease the memories of what happened against Los Angeles.“Every time I’ve gotten back on the field it’s a new opportunity,” he said. “You’re not tied to your past failures.”He’s also not looking beyond this weekend, when reminded the Bills’ home-opener is against the Chargers on Sept. 16.“Yeah, that’s two weeks away. And like I say, it’s day to day,” Peterman said. “It’s about the Ravens.”NOTES: McDermott said Ryan Groy has earned the starting spot at center. … DT Kyle Williams (right knee) practiced, though he’s not sure he’ll be ready to play Sunday. … The Bills filled out their 10-player practice squad by signing offensive lineman Ruben Holcomb and defensive tackle Robert Thomas. Another season is in the books, which means we need another in-depth way to look at penalties. How did the Buffalo Bills do as a team when it comes to flags? The masses yearn for answers, and man do we have some! Before we dive in though, I’d like to thank NFLpenalties.com for their unrivaled access to the information I need for these posts. Penalty CountFor a good chunk of this recap, I thought it would be intriguing to compare the 2018 Buffalo Bills to not only the league rates, but also the 2017 Buffalo Bills. League averages for both years are included so we can see how the league shifted as well. When comparing this year’s assessed penalties for the Bills to the rest of the league, it’s not good. While the per-game rates don’t come across as terrible at 0.55 above the norm, it’s fifth-worst in the league. Arguably, the true or total flags better-represents penalty tendency. The Bills are still sixth-worst in the league with that measure. Before we compare the Bills’ two seasons John Brown Jerseys 2019 , note that the league rates went up slightly for both assessed and true counts by 0.1 flags per game. There are two important considerations for this information. First, playoffs tend to lower the rate slightly, so the gap could lessen between the two league years in the coming weeks. Second, the increase is not enough to explain the increase in the Bills’ rates. For the Bills, in both measures they increased more than a full penalty per game. Last year’s team was actually better-than-average when it comes to penalties, making the jump even more glaring. Penalty yardsYardage—the second half of traditional metrics—shows similar patterns to the count data above. The 2017 Bills performed better than league average when it came to assessed yards. They also did much better than the 2018 Bills. This year’s team remains fifth-worst in the league using this metric. For negated yards, both years for the Bills were about the same with 18.53 negated yards in 2017 and 17.75 yards per game this season. While that doesn’t change the findings from everything else, the silver lining is that they weren’t wiping out more positive gains than last year. Penalty harmI thought it’d be fun to show some of the more hidden data points that go into penalty harm. A lot of discussion focuses on yardage (assessed and negated) but there’s plenty of other talking points built into harm. Negated turnovers are quite rare, with only one per season and fortunately both on an opponent. Negated points aren’t incredibly common either but if you wanted a quick look, here you go. In both years, the Bills negated a touchdown. In 2018, Kyle Williams negated an opponent’s extra point which is assessed as negative harm or a “good” thing. In better news, opponents wiped out more points than the Bills in both years. For downs, this is the sum of how many free downs were given to an opposing offense (ex: from defensive holding), or downs negated (ex: from offensive holding). In both years, the Bills impacted more downs than their opponents. The gap was a good deal wider in 2018. Harm rating is shown two ways. The entire season is there for fun, with the per-game rate likely more relevant. As a home brew stat that’s still fairly fluid when it comes to interpretation, I’ve been indicating that 10.0 per game is the cut-off between good and bad. While that’s not a bad translation, using the two latest seasons of data and considering league data, it brings up the question of why the 2017 Bills are in the range of “bad” when they performed better than league average using standard metrics. It is possible that an above-average team in counts/yards could be worse in harm if, for example, they gave up a high rate of first downs. Without data league-wide, though White Cole Beasley Jerseys , it’s very difficult to truly set a line. The idea that teams should aim for under ten is probably a great conclusion from the last few years of data, but it’s possible that 10.5 or thereabouts might be the better average score. Penalties by phaseOne of the more common musings I see is how each phase of the team is doing when it comes to penalties. From the look of the chart it would appear that the offense is really, really bad. Looking at league frequencies though, the Bills are pretty typical in counts by phase. If anything, special teams is the “problem.” The league rate for offense is 58% and 11% for special teams. For the math-minded, that means the Bills’ defense is nearly perfectly average and the offense is a little bit low. The rest of the data is there for fun, but without league-wide data it’s hard to put into context.Penalties by typeThe holiday season might be over, but I have a gift for the avid penalty followers. That’s right, a sortable chart for penalties by type (it works best in desktop). Aw yeah!Penalties by typePenaltyCountAssessed yardsYards affectedDowns -/+Points affectedSum of HarmPenaltyCountAssessed yardsYards affectedDowns -/+Points affectedSum of HarmIf you went ahead and sorted by count, offensive holding jumps right out at 31. Believe it or not, that’s only eighth-worst in the league. Still bad, but not terribly so. False start? Ninth worst. Defensive holding had the Bills tied for seventh-worst, and when it comes to defensive pass interference they’re tied for eleventh, which is middle of the pack. To compare a bit with pass interference, the league leader New Orleans Saints had 20. Unnecessary roughness and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties weren’t a significant problem. So how did the Bills end up closer to worst than first? While none of the above types were terrible, a decent amount of pretty bad measures adds up. Also, the Bills had the highest volume of assessed illegal-formation penalties in the league. Chicago had one more called than the Bills, but had two declined. Toss in a few similar ones like illegal shift and ineligible downfield flags and they add up to a pre-snap issue on offense. Put that with a higher rate on special teams and you end up near the top of the charts.SummaryLike most things in a league built on parity, there’s not a lot that separates one side of a fence from the other. The 2018 Buffalo Bills really weren’t a far cry from their 2017 counterparts. Pre-snap penalties on offense and a higher-than-normal rate of flags on special teams pulled them from a little better than average to fifth-worst. Many of the more problematic items for the Bills should be able to be cleaned up by having a more steady offseason and tinkering less with lineups. As an example, hitting the league average on illegal formation penalties would have lowered the Bills’ per-game rate to 6.93 penalties. That’s more than halfway back to being average.

For a team with plenty of holes, general manager Brandon Beane wasted no time in plugging a few of them. With plenty of time to add more players via the free-agent market, and plenty of cap space with which to do so, the Bills should continue to add players throughout the coming days and weeks. After the Day 1 buyers’ bonanza dies down, there are often some solid players to be had at comparatively bargain rates.Which players remain on the open market whom the Bills should be target? The following list is by no means complete, so feel free to continue the discussion in the comments.WR Tyrell WilliamsA near-consensus pick as the top receiver on the open market, the 27-year-old burner fits all the Bills’ needs. He’s fast, he’s big (6’4”), and he can play both outside and in the slot. Williams has been stuck in the shadow of Keenan Allen, his higher-profile teammate, for the duration of his career. However, in the one season Allen missed due to injury Thurman Thomas Jerseys 2019 , Williams showed himself capable of being a top-end receiver, hauling in 69 passes for 1,059 yards and seven touchdowns. Adding another big red-zone option for quarterback Josh Allen would be a great move for the Bills, and adding one with the speed to take advantage of Allen’s incredible arm strength makes the fit even more perfect.WR Golden TateA tough veteran wideout, Tate’s numbers have never quite matched his athletic profile, as he averages only 11.8 yards per catch over the course of his career. For a player with his speed, it would be assumed that he did more damage in the long game, but he is a feisty possession guy who has the ability to break free and earn tough yardage in the intermediate passing game. Tate split time between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Detroit Lions last season, catching 74 passes for 795 yards and four touchdowns. For comparison, no Buffalo receiver has caught more than 74 passes in a season since Stevie Johnson did so in 2012, and no Buffalo receiver has surpassed 795 receiving yards in a season since Sammy Watkins went over 1,000 in 2015. OT Daryl WilliamsThe most-Buffalo offensive lineman is the former right tackle of the Carolina Panthers. A massive 6’5” and 335 lb right tackle, Williams would be an instant upgrade over incumbent starter Jordan Mills. The risk, however, comes with Williams’s health, as he missed all but one game last season due to a knee injury he suffered against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1. The injury was an aggravation of one he had actually suffered during training camp. He had surgery in September White Bruce Smith Jerseys , and while he is expected to be fully healthy, signing a player coming off major surgery is always risky.OT LaAdrian WaddleThe veteran tackle spent the last three seasons with the New England Patriots, and while he has spent most of his time as a reserve, he has starting experience from earlier in his career. After the Lions signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2013, Waddle made 26 starts for them over two-plus seasons before joining the Patriots. If the Bills fail to sign Williams, Waddle would provide good depth and competition for a rookie, assuming that the team would go that direction instead if they missed out on their top choice.DE Ezekiel AnsahWhile the pass-rush specialist has not performed to the dominant level expected of a top-five draft pick, Ansah has had a solid career in his six seasons with the Detroit Lions. With the Lions reportedly signing Trey Flowers to a massive contract, they will likely part ways with Ansah, who turns 30 in May. He only played in seven games last season, making two starts, due to a lingering shoulder injury he suffered in Week 1. He made only 11 tackles on the season, adding four sacks. During the 2017 season, he notched 12 sacks and 44 tackles in 14 games. Ansah is a beast when healthy, and he would provide a much-needed boost to Buffalo’s pass rush. The price would have to be right, however Bruce Smith Jerseys 2019 , as the team already has a ton of money sunk into the position (though they could certainly clear space by releasing Trent Murphy). DE Markus GoldenAnother pass-rush specialist coming off an injury, Golden has played for the Arizona Cardinals since they drafted him in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. After a huge 2016 season in which he totaled 51 tackles and 12.5 sacks, Golden has been limited by a string of injuries. He tore his ACL in 2017, and was limited to 11 games in 2018. Since his 2016 campaign, he has played in a total of 15 games, amassing 41 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He began his career as an outside rush linebacker in Arizona’s 3-4 front, but his size (6’3” and 260 lbs) is perfect for a 4-3 defensive end. At 28 years old, the Bills could buy low on a player with some upside to fill depth along their defensive line. First-round picks who don’t get their fifth-year options picked up respond in different ways.Washington wide receiver Josh Doctson said this week that he’s taking no extra motivation from the team’s decision to pass on the option. Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson is taking the opposite view.Lawson said this week that he is using the Bills’ call on 2020 as fuel for his preparations for the year to come.“No, I ain’t concerned. It’s motivation. I know what time it is. It’s do or die,” Lawson said, via the . “I’ve been through a situation like this before. It’s just a small step. Me, I’m just gonna go out there and ball this year and see where everything falls.”Lawson has produced 76 tackles, 10 sacks and four forced fumbles while missing 13 games over his first three seasons. More production and less time on the sideline would be good places to start avoiding the death side of his predicament.
